The Landakotskirkja , actually Basilica Krists konungs ( Christ the King Basilica ) is the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Reykjavik , the very Iceland includes. Sometimes it is also called as Kristskirkja . She received the honorary title of papal minor basilica in 1999. It is located on a hill in the west of the city of Reykjavík .

The first Catholic priests to reach Iceland after the Reformation were French Bernard Bernard and Jean-Baptiste Baudoin in the 19th century. They bought the Landakot estate and built a small chapel there in 1864. A short time later , a small wooden church was built near Túngata .

After the First World War and the establishment of the Apostolic Vicariate in Reykjavík, the desire of Icelandic Catholics for a larger church grew. The architect Guðjón Samúelsson , who built Landakotskirkja in the neo-Gothic style, was commissioned with the construction . The church was then the largest in the country. It was consecrated on July 23, 1929 and was one of the first churches to receive the patronage of Christ the King after Pope Pius XI. 1925 the feast of Christ the King had started.

The flat top of the tower without a helmet , reminiscent of English and Irish models, is striking . Concrete was used as the building material for Landakotskirkja and, as with Hallgrímskirkja , basalt formations were used as a model for the profiling of the pilasters .

Today the only Catholic school in Iceland is attached to the church and is right next to it.
