Landing and translation battalion

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A landing and translation battalion (LÜB) was a name for a military unit of the National People's Army (NVA).

The LÜBs were responsible for the rapid transfer of tank and artillery units. This happened with Soviet tracked vehicles of the type PTS , PTS-M and tank ferries GSP . The latter formed an armored ferry with two tracked vehicles coupled together in the water. Trucks with ammunition were transported on the PTS ferries and the guns, howitzers and grenade launchers were transported on the PKP floating trailers coupled behind them . With this technique it was possible to overcome large water hazards very quickly.

The GDR was divided into two military districts ( MB III and MB V), each of which would have set up five divisions and corps units in the event of mobilization . In November 1973 in the northern military district V , the LÜB-5, which was directly subordinate to the military district, was set up in Havelberg at the mouth of the Havel and Elbe . In December 1981 the battalion was transferred to the Ponton Regiment 5 stationed at the same location.
