State House of Kiel
The Landeshaus Kiel is the seat of the Schleswig-Holstein Landtag. It is located on the west bank of the Kiel Fjord.
history

The building was built in 1888 for the Imperial Navy and was the seat of the commanding admiral of the naval station of the Baltic Sea from 1919 to 1945 . The Schleswig-Holstein Landtag moved into it on May 3, 1950 as a parliament building .
The top floor of the three-story brick building was badly damaged by the air raids on Kiel and had to be rebuilt. As early as autumn 1946, a plan was drawn up to turn the former naval station command into a state house. But it was only three years later that the then President of the State Parliament, Karl Ratz , was able to present the converted house to the public on May 2, 1950. On May 3, 1950, Ratz opened the first session of the state parliament in the state house. By then, the Landtag, first appointed by the military government in 1946 and then elected, had met at various locations in Kiel, Flensburg, Lübeck and Eckernförde. The plenary hall, which was put into use in 1950, was the former assembly hall of the Naval Academy. After the renovation and extension in 2004, the room is used under the name "Schleswig-Holstein-Saal" for major events and meetings of parliamentary committees.
After many renovations since moving into the building in 1950, the construction of a new plenary hall on the waterfront began on February 1, 2001 . This glass part of the building, designed as an extension, was completed in March 2003 according to a design by the Hanover architects Anja Brüning and Wolfgang-Michael Pax. The remodeling of the remaining parts of the building, large areas of the interior and the outdoor area took place by the end of 2004. The first meeting in the new hall took place on April 2nd, 2003.
As a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA and in particular because of the attack on the Zug parliament on September 27, 2001 , additional security measures were taken. Despite the security measures, the public character of the building and thus the transparency of the parliament for the population was only slightly impaired. The corresponding security concept was recognized by the Independent State Center for Data Protection Schleswig-Holstein .
Since 1950, one of the now rare paternoster elevators has been transporting passengers in the Landeshaus .
