The Landesklinikum Gmünd is a hospital in Gmünd run by the Niederösterreichische Landeskliniken-Holding .

history

The hospital in Gmünd was only founded in 1925. A hospital was originally supposed to be built before the First World War . However, since a camp hospital was built for the refugees from Galicia in the Gmünd refugee camp at the beginning of the war , the plan was dropped for the time being.

After the camp closed, some buildings fell to the municipality. Smaller buildings of the former orphanage at the location of today's senior citizens' home were also purchased. So provisional operations could be maintained until the final opening.

At that time the hospital had 120 beds and around 20 employees. Primary was the doctor Viktor Conrath. The hospital was rebuilt several times, for example in the 1920s and 1950s. In 1984, however, a new building was opened.

The previously municipal hospital was handed over to the state of Lower Austria on January 1, 2006, where it has since been managed by the Landeskliniken Holding and has been called the Waldviertel Gmünd Regional Clinic .

As early as 2007, an agreement was signed under the name Health across in practice that, from 2010, treatments will also be carried out by patients from the immediately neighboring Czech city of České Velenice , as the nearest hospital on the Czech side is 60 km away. In fact, due to the preparations, started in 2013 with outpatient treatments. By 2017, 4,000 patients had been treated in this way. The system under the name Healthacross , which was co-financed with EU funding, is to be extended to inpatient treatment. Negotiations with the Czech insurance companies are necessary for this. The inpatient admission of Czech patients should be possible from 2020 at the latest.

In 2019, the State Hospital was awarded the special prize of the jury as part of the State Prize for Corporate Quality as a role model for cross-border health services .
