The Landmann La 17 was a motor glider equipped with an auxiliary engine . It was developed at the Institute for Aircraft Design at the Technical University of Dresden by a study project group under the direction of Hermann Landmann .

Development

With the construction of the La 17, Hermann Landmann pursued the idea of a motorized and therefore thermally independent school glider . As a drive served two-stroke - piston engine of a BK-350 motorcycle top in the wing leading edge, which was strong enough to fly the plane without height loss. It drove a pressure screw on the wing's trailing edge via a tubular shaft. The seats of the flight instructor and student were arranged slightly staggered next to each other for better communication. The construction was made entirely of wood. It basically consisted of the pilot's hull with the wings and the tail unit connected to it by three plastic-coated steel tubes. The wings were braced and had a profile B 106. The landing gear consisted of two non-retractable main wheels and a nose runner.

The La 17 was completed in 1959 and carried out a few flights in the autumn of the same year (registration number DM-3500 ). Since it was not self-launching, it had to be lifted into the air using a winch or aircraft tow . However, the testing was stopped after a short time, presumably because the concept of the "motor glider" did not prevail. Motor glider development was then no longer pursued in the GDR .
