The landscape protection area Ihlower Forst and Niederung des Krummen Tiefs is a landscape protection area in the district of Aurich in the state of Lower Saxony .

Description of the area

The landscape protection area, designated in 1986, covers an area of ​​8.33 square kilometers and extends from the Ihlower Forest along the lowland of the Krummen Tief . It is largely in the territory of the Ihlow parish. To the south of the Schirum district, the city of Aurich has a share in the nature reserve, which has been protected since 1986. It is located in the natural area "East Frisian Geest". In the eponymous forest dominated by common oaks and red beech trees. Black alders and ash trees can be found on the moorland . Alder, ash and willow grow in the alluvial forest. The few coniferous areas are dominated by spruce .

The animals include wild species such as roe deer and fallow deer , foxes , hares and badgers . The still waters, some of which do not have water all year round, serve amphibian species such as pond newt and common frog as spawning waters and habitats. In addition to the Upstalsboom and the surrounding area, the landscape protection area is one of only two known growth species of the stemless primrose in Lower Saxony.

The hair-leaved pondweed thrives as an endangered aquatic plant in the area of ​​the Crooked Depression.
