The nature reserve lakes in the lip lowlands with an area of 221.56 hectares is located in the urban area of Paderborn in the Paderborn district . The landscape protection area (LSG) was designated in 1999 by the district council with the landscape plan Paderborn - Bad Lippspringe . The LSG consists of two sub-areas.

One of the two areas is northwest of Elsen and the other east of Neuhaus Castle . The LSG comprises nine quarry ponds . There are six quarry ponds in the western area. Five of these have the names Nettelnbrecker See , Alter Mühlensee , Mühlensee , Jothesee and Holzbachsee . One of the three eastern lakes is called Tallesee . The east area borders directly on the B 1 to the south . Behind the B 1 lies the lip lowers nature reserve between Bad Lippspringe and Mastbruch mit der Lippe . To the north and west of the western area, there are further quarry ponds. Outside the LSG.
The lakes in the LSG are near-natural, nutrient-poor lakes with bank lines rich in bays, shallow water zones, high-growth vegetation on the banks, reeds and wood on the banks. Rare and endangered plant and animal species are found in the LSG. With the expulsion, the restoration of the Jothe stream was planned. In the LSG, toad tunnels should be built on the roads that intersect the main amphibian hiking trails. The landscape plan stipulated that certain bank areas are to be kept free from any recreational use on water and on land and from any development measures in favor of natural development. In the LSG, any kind of water sports and fishing from a boat is prohibited.
