The Lange-Köchel-See is an artificial body of water that has been naturally flooded as an open-cast mine of the former hard stone quarry Werdenfels by precipitation since its formation. The former pit, which now contains the lake, was created after the superficial mining of glaucous quartzite on the Langen Köchel was exhausted and continued below the level of the surrounding Murnau moss . After the mining activities ended, the pit filled up within a few years.
In the meantime, carp-like fish and amphibians can also be found in the newly created water.
