The rowing and tennis company Wesel 1907 e. V. is a sports club from Wesel on the Lower Rhine. Originally founded as a rowing club, it now also includes a tennis department, a yachting department, a surfing department and a sailing department.

history

On October 1st, 1907, the club was founded under the name Rudergesellschaft Wesel . The initiative to found it came from a regulars' table of hikers, the "Association of Vesals". The activities as a rowing club began with the purchase of a two-person boat. In 1910 the rowing company built a boathouse on the banks of the Lippe . In 1924 the boathouse was expanded. In the same year some resigned club members founded the rowing club Wesel in competition with the rowing society . In March 1929, the association, which had previously consisted of male rowers, decided to build a tennis court for the rowers' wives and daughters. This is how the tennis department came into being, which merged with the Rot-Weiß Wesel tennis club in 1919 . On July 27, 1930, a new boathouse, also located on the Lippe, was set up.

In 1945 the boathouse was destroyed during the Second World War. After the end of the war in the same year, many members temporarily joined the Weseler Sports Association , the only authorized sports club in the city at the time. The first general meeting after the end of the war took place on February 21, 1948 and the association resumed its activities with a new statute. In 1950 a new boathouse on the Lippe was completed and during this time there were also mergers with the rowing club Wesel and the tennis club Wesel , which also included a table tennis department. The previous rowing company in Wesel changed its name to Rowing and Tennis Society Wesel in 1907, also abbreviated RTGW. In the 1950s, the rowing department was particularly successful. In 1957, Wolfgang Nobody was the all-German runner-up in the two-man championship together with Preller from Duisburg . In the same year Ursel Vogt was German runner-up in single , together with Inge Scholz from Duisburg German champion in double scull and won the bronze medal together with Scholz at the European Championships in 1957. The following year, the RTGW athlete became German champion in singles and won the bronze medal in singles at the 1958 European championships.

In 1960 the association moved from its previous home on the Lippe to the Rhine-Aue area west of Wesel city center. First, four tennis courts were completed on the site at the Wesel yacht harbor . In May 1963, the facility, consisting of a boathouse, tennis courts and table tennis hall, was inaugurated in the presence of North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Willi Weyer and the President of the German Rowing Association, Walter Wülfing . Some of the celebrations were broadcast on WDR television . In 1967 more tennis courts were set up and in 1973 a tennis hall was inaugurated. While the table tennis department was dissolved in 1977, a yacht department was re-established in 1978 and a surf department in 1979.

In the 1990s in particular, rowers, sailors and surfers enjoyed further success. In 1990 the rower Julia Steinhoff became German youth champion. In 1994 Robi Winterhoff was the youngest rower to date to receive the Equator Prize of the German Rowing Association, which is awarded for 40,000 kilometers covered. In 1996 the windsurfer Melanie Bienemann became world champion in the serial board class, in 1995 and 1997 she became vice world champion in this discipline. In 2000 Egon Bachtrup became European Champion in the displacement boat class. In 2015 the club was expanded to include a sailing department, which was expanded by the addition of members of the Babcock e. V. was created. The sailing club was previously based in Hünxe .

The rowing and yachting departments are located in a boathouse at the Wesel yacht harbor. In addition to the Rhine and the marina, the rowers also use the Auesee for training purposes. The boathouse has, among other things, a restaurant with outdoor area, a boat hall and a weight room. In addition to competitions, the rowing department of the club also organizes touring rowing trips, some of which last several days. Directly adjacent are four ash courts and a tennis hall that belong to the club's tennis department. The surfing department is located on the north beach of the Auesees and offers not only windsurfing but also stand up paddling on the lake . The sailing department also moved to the Wesel yacht harbor when it was accepted into the club in 2015. Other clubs based at the marina are the Weseler Kanu-Club 1925 e. V. and the Yacht Club Wesel e. V.
