Walter Wülfing

Walter Wülfing (born July 22, 1901 in Hanover ; † November 22, 1986 there ) was President of the German Rowing Association from 1949 to 1966 and an official in several sports associations. In 1976 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1962 to 1976 Wülfing was the first chairman of the ZDF television council .

Life

In 1921 Wülfing began studying law at the University of Göttingen , which he completed with a doctorate in 1928. From 1932 to 1945 he was chairman of the rowing society Hannover-Linden . In 1937 he joined the NSDAP and was an officer in World War II.

Functionary in Germany

German Rowing Association

Walter Wülfing was involved in the re-establishment of the German Rowing Association in Wetzlar in 1949 and was its president. He propagated rowing communities across club boundaries. During his tenure, the German rowers achieved numerous international successes:

  • four gold, five silver and one bronze medal at the Olympic Games
  • First place five times and 3rd place once at world championships
  • at European Championships 24 gold, 15 silver and 8 bronze medals

Wülfing's presidency ended in 1966, and Claus Hess was his successor .

For his services to sport in Lower Saxony , he was accepted into the Lower Saxony Sports Honor Gallery of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History in 1988.

DSB

Wülfing was one of the founding members of the German Sports Association DSB . From 1960 to 1970 he was Vice President of the DSB.

NOK

From 1952 Wülfing was a presidential member of the National Olympic Committee NOK , from 1961 to 1973 he was vice-president. In 1973 he was awarded honorary membership.

Official in the FISA

In 1957 he was appointed to the FISA world association . Here he was responsible for the referee and rules committee. Since 1973 he has been an honorary member of the Presidium.
