Lanwaldus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lanwaldus (* unknown; † 7th century), also Lanualdus , Lantwaldus , Lanuwaldus or Lantivaldus was possibly bishop of Mainz in the first third to the middle of the 7th century. The existence of a bishop of this name is evident from the oldest of the Mainz bishops' lists from the time of Archbishop Heriger (913–927). A bishop named Lanwaldus can be found here as the successor to Petilinus and predecessor of Laboaldus . When Archbishop Hildebert transferred ten pre-Bonifatian bishops of Mainz from St. Hilary to St. Alban, Lanwaldus was named as one of the reburied Mainz bishops in the late 11th century.

No other written testimony has survived, apart from those mentioned and the eight subsequent editors of the list of bishops named Lanwaldus. Eugen Ewig sees no reason to doubt the existence of a bishop of the same name due to the generally limited tradition from this period. Due to the equation of Lanwaldus' predecessor Petilinus with a formerly incumbent bishop Bathodus, which he represented, Ewig puts Lanwaldus on the Mainz list of bishops as the successor of Laboaldus.
