Laodike (wife of Nicomedes III)
Laodike (* around 140 BC) was the eldest daughter of King Mithridates V of Pontus . First she married the king Ariarathes VI. of Cappadocia. After this at the instigation of her brother Mithridates VI. was killed by Pontus (around 111 BC), she exercised the tutelage of her son Ariarathes VII Philometor as regent . When King Nicomedes III. of Bithynia crossed the borders of her country, Laodike asked her brother Mithridates VI. for support, but Nicomedes III. quickly persuaded her to marry him (around 101 BC). Laodike went to Bithynia with her daughter Nysa . Mithridates VI. now pretended to want to protect his nephew Ariarathes VII, but soon eliminated him personally. At the request of Nicomedes III. Laodike now traveled to Rome with a boy whom she was the second son of her first husband Ariarathes VI. and thus as the (allegedly) legitimate heir to the throne of Cappadocia, whose claims the Senate did not recognize.
