The lapis tetra ( Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia ) is a species of fish from the family of the true tetras (Characidae). The species was exported to Germany at the beginning of 2002 by an ornamental fish exporter from the Brazilian city of Belém under the trade name "Lapis Tetra" and was first described in 2006 by Axel Zarske and Jacques Géry as Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia .
The fish from South America (Brazil) reach a size of about 5 cm. The males occupy a small area where spawning females are ready to spawn. The sexes can be easily distinguished by the color of the adipose fin. Similar to that of royal tetras , it is light blue in the male and red in the female.
The species eats everything that stimulates the feeding instinct through movement and fits in its mouth. Spawns from other species are also eaten.
