Paternity dispute

Several men claimed paternity, including Howard K. Stern, Mark Hatten, Frédéric von Anhalt, and Smith's former bodyguard Alexander Denk. However, a DNA test proved Larry Birkhead's paternity. Smith himself had always stated that her lawyer and friend Howard K. Stern was the father. On the anniversary of Anna Nicole Smith's death, Birkhead filed a petition for custody of the child. Birkhead was helped by Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, in his efforts to prove his paternity. Following the court decision, Howard K. Stern's custody will be transferred to Larry Birkhead.

In the course of the lawsuit, Birkhead also disclosed personal information about his relationship with Anna Nicole Smith, as well as about himself and his income.
