Lars-Magnus Harald Christoffer Ohly (born January 13, 1957 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish politician. From February 20, 2004 to January 6, 2012 he was party leader of the Left Party .

Life

Ohly comes from a family of theologians. His grandfather Emil Ohly immigrated to Sweden in 1917 and was pastor of the German parish in Stockholm from 1922 to 1944 ; his father Harald Ohly (1923–2011) was also a pastor. After graduating from high school in 1976, Lars Ohly worked for the Swedish railway company Statens Järnvägar , where he was also involved in the union.

Originally he was politically active in the youth organization of the Liberal People's Party . In 1978 he became a member of the left youth organization Ung Vänster and in 1979 of the Left Party. Member of the party executive committee since 1987, he was appointed party secretary in 1994. In 1998 he moved into the Reichstag , to which he belonged until 2014 after several re-elections. After Gudrun Schyman's resignation as party chairman in 2003, Ulla Hoffmann initially served as acting chairman until Ohly was elected chairman at a party conference in February 2004. He was re-elected in 2010, but declared in August 2011 that he would no longer run for chairmanship at the next party conference in January 2012. Jonas Sjöstedt was his successor . Ohly served as the cultural-political spokesman for his parliamentary group until he left the Reichstag.

In October 2017, Ohly was charged with sexual harassment by a party friend. Because his party then excluded him from various events, Ohly resigned from the Vänsterpartiet in January 2018.
