Larsen - Spasski, Belgrade 1970
The chess game Larsen - Spasski, Belgrade 1970 was played on the occasion of the match between the USSR and the rest of the world in 1970 in Belgrade . The then reigning world chess champion Boris Spasski represented his homeland on the first board against the Dane Bent Larsen . In the 2nd round (4 rounds were played on 10 boards - the end result was 20.5: 19.5 for the USSR), on March 31, 1970, Spasski achieved a splendid victory in 17 moves with the black pieces. The game is considered to be one of the greatest and most ingenious in modern chess.

- Larsen opens with the Larsen system named after him .
1.… e7 – e5 2. Bc1 – b2 Nb8 – c6 3. c2 – c4
- This creates a Sicilian suit . The alternative is 3. e2 – e3, after which Black is concerned with stability with 3.… Ng8 – f6 4. Bf1 – b5 d7 – d6 or with 3.… d7 – d5 4. Bf1 – b5 Bf8 – d6 5. f2– f4 allows tangles.
3.… Ng8 – f6 4. Ng1 – f3
- A few months later, both players had the same position on the board at the 1970 tournament in Leiden . Larsen chose 4. e2 – e3 and the game ended in a draw after 34 moves .

- Larsen and Spasski later criticized this move. Larsen recommended 10. a2 – a3, Spasski 10. Bb2xf6 Qe7xf6 11. Nb1 – c3.

- According to Larsen, 11. 0–0 (11. Be2xg4 De7 – h4 +) was also not playable because of 11.… De7 – h4 12. h2 – h3 h7 – h5.
