The Larsen system (also known as the Larsen opening or Nimzowitsch-Larsen opening ) is an opening for the game of chess .

The Larsen system is one of the closed games and is classified in the opening systematics of the ECO codes under the key A01. The Larsen system becomes with the move ( see also: chess notation )

initiated.

With this restrained structure, the white man plans to influence the center from the flank through the fianchetto of the black-field runner . The most common answer moves are e7 – e5, d7 – d5, c7 – c5 or Ng8 – f6. However, depending on the black answer, numerous transitions to other openings are possible by changing trains :

  • After 1.… d7 – d5 2. f2 – f4 there is the Bird opening . This can only happen later after, for example, 2. Bc1 – b2 c7 – c5 3. e2 – e3

(The position after 3. Ng1 – f3 was created by moving the move in the final of the Tigran Petrosjan - Bobby Fischer , Buenos Aires 1971 candidate competition . After 3.… f7 – f6, 4. e2 – e3 would have been replied with e7 – e5.)

Nb8 – c6 4. Bf1 – b5 Bc8 – d7 5. Ng1 – f3 Ng8 – f6 6. 0–0 e7 – e6 7. d2 – d3 Bf8 – d6 8. Bb5xc6 Bd7xc6 9. Nf3 – e5 Ta8 – c8 10. a2 a4 0-0 11 Sb1-d2 Nf6-d7 12 Se5xd7 Dd8xd7 by 13 f2-f4 result.

This opening is named after the Danish grandmaster Bent Larsen and Aaron Nimzowitsch . In the very well-known game Larsen - Spasski, Belgrade in 1970 , the Dane lost with this system in a spectacular way in only 17 moves.
