The Las Vegas Bowl 1995 was a Bowl Game of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) between the Toledo Rockets and the Nevada Wolf Pack . The Rockets won the game 40:37 in overtime. At the same time, it was the first game with the participation of an NCAA IA team that went into overtime.

background

The NCAA introduced overtime for the 1995 postseason. If no winner was determined after the regular time, each team got the chance to start a drive from the opposing 25-yard line. The Las Vegas Bowl was the first bowl game of the season and took place in front of 11,127 spectators at the Sam Boyd Bowl . The Wolf Packs qualified for the game with nine wins and three losses, while the Rockets, ranked number 25 in the AP Poll , were unbeaten and played the game with a score of 10-0-1.

Course of the game

Both teams were very attacking. The Wolf Pack defense was strong against the run in the first quarter, letting Wasean Tait run just seven yards. In the second quarter, however, he was able to break through and scored touchdown after runs over 18 and 31 yards. In the middle of the second quarter the Rockets were already leading 21: 7. At the beginning of the final quarter, Tait ran a 26-yard touchdown and increased the Rockets' lead to 34:24. The Rockets, however, gave this leadership. After a fumble from Tait, one of the Rockets' four turnovers in the game, the Wolf Packs captured the ball at Toledo's four-yard line. From there, with 9:28 minutes remaining, they were able to score a 26-yard field goalachieve the balance. Neither team scored any points in the rest of the regular time and the game went into overtime. Toledo won the coin toss and chose to defend first. This decision was accompanied by boos from fans of both camps. The Wolf Packs couldn't get past a 22-yard field goal on their drive. Toledo only needed four plays in their drive to score after Tait scored the winning touchdown with a two-yard run.
