Laser threshold

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The laser threshold or pumping threshold describes the minimum required pump power of a laser , at which gain through energy supply and loss through absorption in the laser medium and through the coupling out of the generated emission are balanced out. This intensity threshold indicates the point above which the laser begins to work.

In the case of laser diodes , it is customary not to specify a power, but rather a current strength , since these lasers are pumped with direct current , and this variable is easier to measure and determine. In this case the name threshold amperage is also used.
