The Latemarwald is a forest near Welschnofen on the northern flank of the Latemar mountain range in South Tyrol , which is considered to be one of the most beautiful spruce forests in Europe. Spruce trees find ideal conditions on calcareous soil at an altitude of 1400–2100 meters with abundant rainfall and short growing seasons . The stands of the Latemar Forest are mostly located on north-northeast and north-west slopes, with the lower slopes being rather flat, the upper slopes being rather steep and criss-crossed by mud ditches and avalanche lines. The spruces there reach an age of 200 to 250 years and heights of up to 45 meters. The even growth and the narrow growth rings also make the wood that is processed in the sawmill Latemar owned by the Province of South Tyrol in great demand. In addition to the common spruce , the hazel spruce , which is sought for instrument making , the fir , larch and stone pine grow in the Latemar Forest in the higher elevations as well as the pine on shallow locations.
