A gangplank ( also known as Stelling or Pasarella in seafaring , English "gangboard" ) is one of the items of equipment on a barge . In the seafaring stairs or gangways are used. The gangway is used to get safely from the ship to land. The design is subject to legal regulations in Germany.

properties

In the past, gangplanks were made of wood, now they are made of aluminum . They must be constructed in such a way that they can swim. In the case of wooden gangplanks, the walking surface was painted with non-slip paint and stepping sticks were attached across the direction of movement, like on a chicken ladder. There must be a railing about one meter high on at least one side. The handrail supports are removable and a rope that is attached to the front and back of the plank runs as a handrail . A laid-out gangplank must be secured against slipping on the ship.

With aluminum decks, the tread consists of an anti-slip profile. The side bars are designed as closed hollow bodies for buoyancy. Wheels are often attached to the landside end of the plank with which it can move on land when the water level changes.

Walkways are available in stores in various widths (30–60 cm) and lengths (two to eight meters). Special constructions for upscale yacht building are also made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic .
