The Laughlan Islands (Budibudi Islands, Laughlan Islands) are a group of nine Melanesian islands in the Solomon Sea . Politically, they belong to the municipality of Murua Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area in the Samarai Murua district of Milne Bay Province in the southeastern part of Papua New Guinea . The Laughlan Islands are located 80 km east of the Woodlark Islands and are administered from them.
geography
General
The islands form a horseshoe-shaped lagoon that opens to the west. The largest islands are Budelun and Wabomat . The population was 216 on the cut-off date of the 2000 census. Only the main island Budelun is inhabited. The village of Budibudi stretches as a narrow band along the west coast facing the lagoon.

history
The British merchant David Laughlan discovered the islands on August 16, 1812 on a trip with his ship Mary from Port Jackson to Bengal .
economy
Coconuts are the basis of the diet of the approx. 300 inhabitants. The pigs they keep are numerous and large. The people of the Laughlan Islands barter coconuts, pigs, grass skirts, sleeping mats and ocean-going canoes , which they exchange for sago and other food on Woodlark .
language
Budibud is spoken in the Laughlan Islands, a language that, along with Muyuw, which is spoken on Woodlark, belongs to the Kilivila language group. The archipelago forms the northern end of the Kula ring .
