The Conflict Islands (also Conflict Atoll ) are an uninhabited atoll in the Solomon Sea . Politically, they belong to the Milne Bay province in southeast Papua New Guinea . They are 80 km southeast of the Normanby and 35 km north of the Long Reef belonging to the Louisiade Archipelago , between the Engineer Islands to the west and the Deboyne Islands to the east.

The islands were discovered in 1879 by the British warship Cormorant and named after the war schooner Conflict , who visited the islands again in 1880 under the command of Captain Bower.

The archipelago forms a pear-shaped, 9 km wide and up to 21 km long reef, with a central lagoon up to 30 m deep. There are three junctions between the lagoon and the northeastern Coral Sea , the largest of which, called Ship-Pass , is on the southwestern side.

The total area of the atoll is 18 km². Most of the islands are on the northeast and northwest edges of the reef. On the south side there are only three small, narrow islands with sparse vegetation (Panamaiia, Tarapaniian and Panaiiaii). In addition, there are two islands in the center of the lagoon (Kisa and Itamarina).

There are coconut palm plantations and pearl fishing on the Conflict Islands . In 1896 Henry Alexander Wickham , who in 1876 smuggled 70,000 seeds from the Brazilian rubber tree to England , ran a slug farm on Panasesa .

The Conflict Islands have been in the “Mixed Objects” category since 2006, which combines criteria of both cultural and natural heritage, together with Lunn Island , the Jomard Islands as well as Samarai and Bramble Haven under the name: Milne Bay Seascape (Pacific Jewels of Marine Biodiversity) on the Tentative list of Papua New Guinea for the list of world heritage of UNESCO .

Since December 2011 there has been a small luxury holiday complex on Panasesa in the west of the group, which can accommodate up to 12 guests.
