Laura is a city in northern Queensland , Australia . This part of the state is also known as Far North Queensland .

The place is located in the area of ​​the Cape York Peninsula . The city of Cairns is about 300 kilometers southeast and the Lakefield National Park joins directly to the north.

history

Aboriginal people have lived in the region for 50,000 years. The researcher Archibald Macmillan discovered the Laura River in 1873 and named it after his wife's first name. The village was also given this name. Nearby, in the Palmer River , gold was found and a railway line was built from Cooktown to Laura and to the Palmer River Goldfields , which was completed in 1888. However, since the gold finds were not very productive, the railway connection was soon discontinued.

Today Laura is best known for the prehistoric Aboriginal drawings on the cliffs in the area. 151 people live in the village.
