Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards ( February 27, 1850 - January 14, 1943 ) was an American writer . Her father was Samuel Gridley Howe , founder of the Perkins School for the Blind, and her mother the poet Julia Ward Howe . It was named after Laura Bridgman , her father's famous deafblind student. Her cousin was the writer Francis Marion Crawford .

Laura E. Richards became known for her children's books and, together with her sister Maud Elliott Howe, won the Pulitzer Prize for the biography of her mother.

She received the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award posthumously in 1959 for her children's book Tirra Lirra .
