history

An unauthorized document from Emperor Ludwig the German dated May 22, 853 mentions the Bünde Church ("Buginithi") in the Diocese of Osnabrück for the first time. The document, which was actually created around 886-888, refers to an older, unspecified document from Ludwig the Pious, in which the donation of the church in Bünde to the Herford convent was already established. Since the donation from the church in Rheine in the diocese of Münster to the Herford monastery, which is also confirmed in the document of "May 22, 853", is documented for June 7, 838, the document from Ludwig the Pious for Bünde, which has not been handed down, is likely to be issued during this time have been. The imperial donation and the Laurentius patronage of the church allow the assumption that the church was built as a separate church for a royal court as early as the late 8th century. Today's church is essentially a late Romanesque building with a closed choir and a projecting transept with two side apses. Around 1507–1509 the church was expanded to a two-aisled hall by adding a north aisle. The tower dates from the 12th century.

The installation of a new heating system made a detailed archaeological excavation necessary in 1979, the results of which distinguish the construction periods I, II, IIa, III, IV and V. The meager finds mean that art historians are extremely careful when it comes to dating. Period I could not be dated, but the first detectable construction was preceded by a settlement period. Due to the wall technology, the 10th century could be considered as the construction period for Building II. The Romanesque tower, still visible today, was added in period IIa. The late Romanesque Kreuzsaal, which still exists today, was built in the 13th century.

In 1985 the church was listed as a historical monument .
