biography

Early years

Lauri Ylönen learned to play the piano at the age of five. He later learned guitar and drums. In elementary school he met Eero Heinonen (who later became the bassist of The Rasmus).

The Rasmus

In the early 1990s, Ylönen and Heinonen met Pauli Rantasalmi and Janne Heiskanen at Suutarila High School. In 1994 Ylönen started the Rasmus project with Eero Heinonen (bass) Pauli Rantasalmi (guitar) and Janne Heiskanen (drums) (at that time they called themselves first "Sputnik", then "Anttila" and finally "Rasmus"). They made their first appearances in 1994 at their school. Ylönen is the band's front man and composer. Because of the music, he dropped out of school. At the age of 15, Ylönen signed his first record deal for his band. After the release of three albums, Janne Heiskanen left the band in 1998 and Aki Hakala became the new drummer for The Rasmus. In the same year they moved from Warner Music Finland to Playground Music Scandinavia.

Solo project

In November 2010, the Finnish media reported Ylönen's announcement that he would release a solo album. His first solo album New World was released on March 30, 2011. The pre-single Heavy was released on February 25.

Private

Lauri Ylönen married his longtime partner and mother of his son Julius Kristian Ylönen, former PMMP singer Paula Vesala on November 8, 2014 in Las Vegas. Both announced this in a statement on December 29, 2014. On January 5, 2015, the marriage was registered in Helsinki. The marriage ended in divorce in 2016.
