Lawn Hill

Lawn Hill is the eroded remnant of an impact crater in Queensland ( Australia ). The structure is characterized by an 18 km ring of limestone mountains . The cause of the circular structure was unknown until 1987 and was only identified as an impact structure through the discovery of cones of rays and shocked quartz crystals . The rock is severely eroded and it is believed that the crater was originally about 20 km in diameter. The age of the crater is controversial, with some indications that the impact occurred around 515 million years ago.

Based on the theory that the crater was filled by the sea shortly after it was formed, it could be that the crater provided a protected, unique environment for primitive life. It could therefore be a significant analogy to the sediment- filled craters on Mars .
