Lawrence "Tom" Sawyer, Baron Sawyer (born May 12, 1943 ) is a British trade unionist and Labor Party politician , of which he was General Secretary from 1994 to 1998.

life and career

Sawyer attended Dodmire School, Eastbourne Comprehensive School, and Darlington Technical College . After graduating, Sawyer worked as an engineer before joining the union. In 1971 he was elected a functionary of the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE), in 1975 its regional representative for the north. In 1981 he was elected deputy chairman of the NUPE, which he remained until it merged with UNISON in 1994. During the same period Sawyer was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labor Party and from 1991 onwards chairman of the party.

In 1994 he was elected Secretary General of the Labor Party and led it successfully in the British general election of 1997 . He resigned from his post at the 1998 Labor Convention and was named Baron Sawyer , of Darlington in the County of Durham, on August 4, 1998 . In the following years he headed a number of companies and public institutions as chairman. In 2004 he was appointed as the successor to Leon Brittan as the new Chancellor of the University of Teesside .
