Ernst Wilhelm Straßberger (born October 14, 1796 in Leipzig ; † September 11, 1866 there ) was a German painter , draftsman and lithographer . The focus of his work were depictions in connection with the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig .

Life

Ernst Wilhelm Straßberger was the son of the painter Christian Gotthelf Straßberger (1770–1841). He studied with Veit Hanns Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1764–1841) at the Leipzig Art Academy , which was then located in the west wing of the Pleißenburg , and in the meantime also at the Dresden Academy .

At the age of seventeen he experienced the events of the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig in October 1813, which were to shape his work. From 1823 to 1842 he worked as an enamel painter in the Meissen porcelain factory . Then he lived freelance in Leipzig.

His son Bruno Heinrich Straßberger (1832–1910) was also a painter, draftsman and illustrator.

Create

The battle of the nations was at the center of Straßberger's work. He is therefore also referred to as a military painter and battle painter. 80 of the 100 or so of his works stored in the Leipzig City History Museum deal directly or indirectly with the Battle of Nations. They range from a simple pencil drawing of a funeral cart to oil paintings of skirmishes with tons of fighters. In the latter, which prove his painterly skills, he has depicted almost all of the contested villages around Leipzig.

There are also historical cityscapes and a portrait of the Commander-in-Chief of the First German Imperial Fleet , Rear Admiral Karl Rudolf Brommy (1804–1860), who was born in Leipzig

Honor

On April 1, 2001 in the Leipzig district of Liebertwolkwitz, the previous Arndtstraße was renamed Straßbergerstraße . There is a reference to the place through his picture "Reiterschlacht bei Liebertwolkwitz", which hangs in the memorial museum in Liebertwolkwitz.
