Veit Hanns Friedrich Schnorr von Carolsfeld (born May 11, 1764 in Schneeberg , † April 30, 1841 in Leipzig ) was a German painter and etcher.

Life

Schnorr's father was a councilor and Accisinspektor in Schneeberg and he was the eighth of 16 children. The family originally came from Sweden or Iceland. Schnorr studied law in Leipzig from 1784, but switched to art in 1788. He went to Königsberg and at the end of 1789 to Magdeburg, before returning to Leipzig in 1790 and studying with Adam Friedrich Oeser . He painted paintings, illustrated the works of Wieland and Klopstock (Oden) for the publisher Göschen and was a theater painter.

Schnorr belonged to the circle of friends of the poet Johann Gottfried Seume and accompanied him on his trip to Syracuse in 1801 (described in Walk to Syracuse ), but separated from him in Vienna . Seume described the reasons for his wandering through Italy without further accompaniment by saying that for a family man it would have been recklessness . Schnorr returned to Leipzig via Vienna, Paris and Strasbourg in 1802.

In 1803 he became a sub-teacher at the Art Academy in Leipzig . After the death of Johann Friedrich August Tischbein , he became director of the Leipzig Academy in 1816 and held this position until his death in 1841.

Schnorr was an important portrait painter, he created portraits of Seume (in the Gleimhaus in Halberstadt, also the title copper engraved by AW Böhm for the 3rd edition of the poems Seumes is based on his original), Immanuel Kant (drawing, Dresden Kupferstichkabinett) and Friedrich Rochlitz . Other paintings were after contemporary poetry. There were many etchings by him and he also provided templates for sculptures and carved and modeled himself. He also wrote writings on art education. A painted self-portrait from private ownership was at the Dresden Centennial Exhibition in 1906.

family

Two sons of Schnorr, from his first marriage, also became important painters:

The daughter Ottilie (1792–1879), who came from his first marriage to the Leipzig merchant's daughter Juliane Lange (1766–1815), married the reform pedagogue Karl Justus Blochmann .

After the dissolution of the first, second marriage with Wilhelmine Irmisch, daughter Charlotte came from, who married August Otto Krug .
