The ICARE Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy

The Sino-European Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy (CE-ICARE; English: China-EU Institute for Clean and Renewable Energy; Chinese (simplified): 中欧 清洁 与 可 再生 能源 学院) is a teaching and research institute in Wuhan , People's Republic China , at Central China University of Science and Technology (HUST). It was founded in July 2010. The ICARE is the third Sino-European institute created in China, after the China-EU International Business School in Shanghai in 1984 (as China-EC Management Institute) and the China-EU School of Law in Beijing, founded in 2008 The ICARE project is funded for five years by the EU and the Chinese government.

The establishment follows an agreement signed in 2009 by the European Commissioner for External Relations, Benita Ferrero-Waldner , and the Chinese Minister for Foreign Trade, Gao Hucheng, as part of the Sino-European cooperation on climate protection and the fight against climate change.

The aim of the organization is to support the Chinese government in the implementation of measures to reduce primary energy consumption and CO 2 emissions with the help of renewable energies and energy efficiency.

ICARE institute

The ICARE Institute serves as a university teaching facility for students as well as a training center for specialist staff from China. It was founded with the aim of becoming the leading energy efficiency and renewable energy institution in China. ICARE is supported by a consortium of higher education institutions consisting of seven European members in five countries and three Chinese members:

Programs offered

Master in Clean and Renewable Energy

It is a double master’s program consisting of the Master’s in Power Engineering and Energy Science from the University of Science and Technology Central China (HUST) and the Master’s in Clean and New Energy from ParisTech (CARE). A bachelor's degree in engineering or a related natural science is required. The courses at ICARE are given in English by lecturers from Europe and China who are recognized experts in their field at their home university. The subjects taught include solar energy, wind energy, biomass, geothermal energy, hydrogen and energy storage and energy efficiency. There is also a six-month internship in research institutions in Europe or China, in which the students combine the knowledge they have learned with practical experience. 160 students are currently enrolled in the master’s degree (as of March 2013). The first year of study will receive its double master's degree on March 15, 2013.

Further training for experts from the energy sector

The ICARE has set up a platform for further training to meet the needs of domestic and international companies for professional training of their employees (decision-makers, engineers, etc.) in the field of clean and renewable energy. For this purpose, experts from the associated partner universities develop tailor-made programs. The first event took place over three days in January 2013 and dealt with the subject of “Technologies in Photovoltaics”.

Research platform

A research platform is currently being set up at ICARE to facilitate the exchange and supervision of doctoral students between European and Chinese universities. In addition, the research platform is intended to promote contact and scientific exchange between Chinese and European lecturers who come to teach at ICARE, and to facilitate joint research projects. Leading experts in the field of clean and renewable energy give regular conferences at ICARE.
