The Laya are semi-nomads in the northern highlands of Bhutan . The Laya speak a dialect of the state language of Bhutan, Dzongkha, but with so many variations that only the initiated understand this language.

The clothing consists of yak hair and sheep's wool , which are woven on belt looms. The individual pieces of clothing in the female costume are a black shirt and a black skirt with light vertical stripes, a black wool jacket, heavy felt boots and a cone-shaped hat made of bamboo . The jewelry is mostly made of silver and is worn on the back .

Yak breeding

Most of the Laya pursue yak breeding , which serves as a livelihood. They use the yak hair to make tents and clothing, the meat is eaten, the milk is made into cheese and butter, and the yak dung is used as fuel. In addition, the yaks are used as work animals and pack animals on the arable land.
