The term layer-by-layer process or substrate layering denotes a process for applying monomolecular layers of polyelectrolytes to a substrate . The substrate must have a surface charge so that an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte can attach. The alternating application of cationic and anionic polyelectrolyte solution creates a layer system that is based on a strong Coulomb interactionis very stable. A washing process is necessary after each shift. Polyelectrolytes that do not adhere to the surface are removed in order not to neutralize the solution of the subsequent layer. The solutions can be applied to the substrate by spraying or spin coating , or the substrate is dipped directly into the polyelectrolyte solution.
