LeRoy E. Cain (born February 4, 1964 in Dubuque, Iowa ) is an American NASA engineer and flight director.

Life

Cain received his Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University in 1988 . He started working in the space industry that same year. At NASA in the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston he was responsible for planning the space shuttle missions and worked in the Mission Control Center in real-time support. Cain started out as an employee of the Rockwell Shuttle Operations Company and joined NASA in 1991.

In 1997, Cain became manager of the Space Shuttle Ascent / Entry Guidance and Procedures Section, and subsequently became flight director and served on 17 space shuttle missions. There were six missions as flight director at take-off and eight as flight director at landing. As part of the STS-107 mission , he was flight director during the Columbia crash.

Cain was then temporarily acting deputy manager of the Space Shuttle Program and acting deputy director of Space Shuttle Processing 2004. In November 2005 he was then manager of the launch integration at the Kennedy Space Center . With the direct reporting channel to Wayne Hale , he supported the integration and operation of the space shuttle program with the complete management. In April 2008, Cain returned to the Johnson Space Center to serve as Deputy Shuttle Program Manager for Shuttle Program Manager John Shannon .

  • 1996: Certificate of Commendation from Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center
