Le Chevalier de la charrette (Eng. The Cart Knight ) by Chrétien de Troyes is a verse tale of Arthurian epic , written between 1177 and 1181 .

The cart knight , comprising around 7134 verses, is Chrétien's third Arthurian novel. It begins with a provocation of the court by Meleagant , the son of Gorres, who arrests several knights of the court and claims to want to fight with everyone. When he asked Queen Guenièvre as pledge for this, Arthur was persuaded by Kex to do so. The truchess Kex himself is then also subject to Meleagant and Gauvain and a stranger, who later reveals himself to be Lancelot du Lac , must pursue the wicked.
