Yvain ou Le Chevalier au lion (Eng. Iwein or the Lion Knight ) by Chrétien de Troyes is an old French story of Arthurian epic and was written between 1180 and 1190 .

overview

The fourth Arthurian novel by Chrétiens, comprising 6818 verses, addresses the problem of too many aventiurs and is therefore often seen as a counterpart to Erec et Enide . Yvain found here without great effort his wife, but loses it again when he after a year of Aventiure can not arrive in time for the specified date. Yvain loses one woman because he thinks he has to stand up for all women. The following life turned the knight first into a professional fighter, then into a hermit existing on the fringes of societyis aimed at regaining the lost favor of the one lady, and thus problematizes the adventure requirement on the knight, which makes family life impossible. Yvain regains his sanity (which he lost as a hermit) thanks to a lion. The lion accompanies Yvain on his adventures. Hence the name Le Chevalier au lion.

The Yvain fabric became known in German-speaking countries through the processing of Hartmann von Aue , who had previously adapted the Erec .
