Le Destroit (Latin: Districtum , Arabic: Casel Destreiz , also Bayas , Khirbat Dustray , Petra Incisa ) is a crusader castle in the immediate vicinity of the town of Atlit in today's Israel . It is located about 20 kilometers south of Haifa , about one kilometer from the sea.

history

The crusaders from the Kingdom of Jerusalem built the relatively small castle no later than 1103 on the ruins of an ancient predecessor complex. In the course of the 12th century, Le Destroit came into the possession of the Knights Templar . During the Fifth Crusade around 1218, the order built a stronger fortress called Château Pèlerin less than two kilometers to the west on a peninsula on the Mediterranean Sea . Le Destroit then lost its importance and was finally destroyed by the Mamluks around 1264 .
