leanXcam

The leanXcam is an open-source - smart camera for applications in the field of computer vision . The hardware design is free . It can be downloaded for free, which makes it possible to make the board yourself.

When it was presented at the Vision Fair in Stuttgart in 2008, leanXcam met with a great response in the media.

use

The leanXcam is used by various universities, authorities, industrial companies and private customers worldwide. The open source philosophy is met with great interest, especially among universities, and these universities themselves make library files freely available on the Internet.

In the known applications, the leanXcam is used to automate production processes and quality assurance and to operate them autonomously. In the security area, the camera is used to detect objects within the viewing window and otherwise trigger an alarm. The leanXcam can also be used as a simple webcam to easily post moving images on the Internet.

hardware

The intelligent camera contains a Blackfin DSP processor (ADSP-BF537), which can analyze and evaluate the image data directly. The camera sensor delivers 60 images per second with a resolution of 752 × 480 pixels. This combination enables operation without an external PC. Communication works via the Ethernet interface of the camera or for small amounts of data via RS-232 and I²C .

software

The freely available uClinux is used as the operating system . This enables the use of various standard programs, for example web servers , directly on the camera. The Oscar open source program library enables the hardware to be controlled and monitored using appropriate drivers. Various sample applications in the programming languages C and C ++ are freely available on the Internet and can be used as a basis for implementing your own projects.

Community

The open source project lives from a large community which is supported by the development portal of ETH Zurich . The resources for your own developments and extensions of the software can be found on GitHub. Numerous software examples, documentation and libraries are freely available online.

Awards

In 2008 the most important trade fair for industrial image processing (VISION) presented leanXcam with the “Vision Award 2008”.
