The Lech Hill (Polish: Wzgórze Lecha ) is the elevation of the seven Gnieznos hills , on which the legendary Duke Lech was once animated in the shade of a tree by a beautiful white eagle to do the same and build his nest on the hill ( Nest is called Gniazdo , which over the centuries became Gniezno ). In fact, the oldest part of Gniezno is on the Lech hill. Its namesake Lech is considered to be the founder of the town of Gniezno and the founder of the Polish state . The white eagle that encouraged Duke Lech to build the nest (Gniezno) on the hill can still be found on the Polish national flag .

During the interwar period (1919–1939), but especially since 1948, excavation work provided evidence of the existence of a castle complex built between 940–41. According to the sources, there was a pagan temple on the hill before (the historian Jan Długosz speaks of a place of worship of the god Nyja ), the destruction of which dated between 1040 and 1050 based on research by Prof. Hilczer-Kurnatowskas (1932-2013). In the area of the first castle settlement Gniezno, a church was built towards the end of the 10th century, which in 1000 was elevated to the status of the archbishop's main church (archikatedra).
