The leather street is a street in Lübeck .

location

The approx. 60 meter long Lederstraße is located in the Marien Quartier on the western edge of the old town island and runs in a north-south direction. It connects Braunstraße , where it begins opposite the confluence of Einhäuschen Querstraße , with Holstenstraße . In the southern part of the Holstenstrasse it is a pedestrian zone, the other part serves as the entrance to the inner courtyard of the Posthof.

history

Lederstraße is first mentioned in a document in 1362 as Ledderstrate . In 1444 it is recorded as a leather town . The current name was officially established in 1852.

The name is probably derived from the fact that the shoemakers , whose stalls were located on the nearby western edge of the market , lived and ran their workshops on this street .

The historic buildings were destroyed in the air raid on Lübeck on March 29, 1942 ; Today Lederstraße is lined on both sides by simple functional buildings from the post-war period, apart from the side wall of the corner house at Braunstraße 19 built in 1768 .
