Lee Bee Wah (born October 6, 1960 in Johor , Malaysia ) is a Malaysian-born Singaporean engineer and politician. She is a member of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) and has represented the Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency in the Singapore parliament since 2011 . She was previously with the Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency until it was spun off into her current constituency in 2011.

Early life

Lee was born in October 1960 in Johor, the southernmost state of Malaysia. She comes from a humble family. Both of her parents were rubber collectors.

education

Lee received her elementary education at Kiow Min Chinese Primary School and then went to Sekolah Dato 'Dol Said, Notre Dame Convent and Gajah Berang. She attended the National University of Singapore from 1981 to 1982 before moving to Nanyang Technological University , where she stayed until her Bachelor of Engineering in 1985. From 1989 to 1990 she attended the University of Liverpool , where she obtained a Master of Science degree in engineering.

Described by her university as a passionate graduate, Lee founded the Class of 1985 Pioneer Fund in 1985 , a fundraising program that raised several million dollars for academic purposes. From 1997 to 2008 she became President of the NTU School of Civil & Environmental Engineering Alumni Association (NTU CEEAA). Lee received the 2000 Nanyang Technological University Alumni Service Award from NTU. Six years later she also received the Nanyang Alumni Achievement Award from NTU. In the same year, the Cambodian government presented her with the Royal Order of Cambodia .

In 2011 the University of Liverpool awarded her an honorary doctorate. In 2012 she received the Nanyang Distinguished Alumni Award from NTU.

Professional career

A trained engineer, Lee founded LBW Consultants LLP in 1996. Her company was taken over in 2014 by the global engineering firm Meinhardt Group, where she is currently Group Director. Prior to entering politics, Lee was also a senior engineer at ST Construction and assistant project manager at Wing Tai Properties Limited. From 2008 to 2010 she was President of the Institution of Engineers Singapore.

Lee is a MP in Singapore and a member of the PAP. She was a member of the Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency from 2006 to 2011 and a member of the Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency since 2011 . She chairs the government's parliamentary committee on national development and the environment and water resources. Lee was the President of the Singapore Table Tennis Federation from 2008 to 2014.

Personal life

Lee is married and has two children. She is a Buddhist .

Controversy

Lee has been criticized for telling a story in Chinese about "Ah Gong" and "Ah Seng" during a budget debate in Parliament on February 27, 2019 . In her story she referred to the Singaporeans as "Si Gui Kia", translated as "ungrateful brats" because they do not recognize what Ah Gong (Singapore government) has done for them. The video of her parliamentary speech quickly went viral.
