Lee Andrew Hendrie (born May 18, 1977 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player . The midfielder has been under contract with Derby County since September 2009 .

Career

Hendrie, who was born in Birmingham, started out playing for local Aston Villa . He is the son of Paul Hendrie , who was also a soccer player. He made his first professional appearance on October 23, 1995 on the occasion of the 0-1 defeat at the Queens Park Rangers . He won the club's internal award for the best young player of the season in the 1997/98 season. On November 18, 1998, he also played his only A international match for the English national team against the Czech Republic .

Over time, however, his progress slowed and a series of red cards stopped his initially promising career until he finally gave him a second chance in 2003 with David O'Leary, the new coach of the "Villans". After losing his regular seat again in the 2005/06 season, it looked like Hendrie's time at Aston Villa was nearing its end as Portsmouth FC showed interest in signing Hendries. Since the transfer did not materialize during the transition period in summer 2006, Hendrie was loaned to Stoke City on September 29, 2006 instead . On January 30, 2007, the loan period was extended to the end of the 2006/07 season.

On July 19, 2007 Hendrie moved to Sheffield United on a free transfer , where he signed a 3-year contract. On January 12, 2008, he scored the first goal for his new club. A month later, however, it was "on the road" again and between February and April 2008 Hendrie helped out at Leicester City . Before the start of the 2008/09 season he had come back to Sheffield regularly, but then moved again on loan between November 2008 and the end of the year - now to Blackpool FC . In the next season he moved to Derby County in exchange with Jordan Stewart .
