The Niedertor was built in 1626 by the fortress builder Hans Strackwitz (Jan Strakowski) according to the overall plans of Cornelius van den Bosche in 1619. Like all Strakowski's works, the gate shows influences from the Dutch Baroque.

The gate was made of brick and clad on the outside with stone slabs. Next to the passage with barrel vault there are two passages.

The gate was spared the war damage. Even the outside and inside of the wooden gate leaves have been preserved. The gate is - as the only one of the Gdańsk city gates - passable. In the 30s of the 20th century the moat was filled in and the drawbridge was removed. This means that the base parts of the facade are no longer visible.

The Niedertor lies between the Gertruden and Auroch bastions and forms the exit in the direction of the Danziger Werder.
