Leg spin is a term of Cricket Sports and refers to a specific type, the ball to bowl . As a subspecies of spin bowling , the ball is bowled by a right-hander and the so-called wrist-spin technique is used.

The bowler uses his wrist to create the drift . The drift is usually stronger than in the off-spin . In contrast, the bowler has greater difficulties with the accuracy of his throw. The bowler holds the ball with his index and ring finger, with the middle finger also resting on the seam of the ball. When leaving the ball from the hand, the fingers are stretched and the ball is controlled by the ring finger. Furthermore, the wrist is folded down so that the palm is facing up. This process causes the ball to spin counterclockwise.

The ball leaves the bowler's hand at speeds typically slower than 90 km / h. The danger here is not in the speed as in pace bowling , but in the spin that the ball gets. The spin causes the ball to change its direction of movement after it hits the ground. In leg spin , the ball spins to the left as seen from the right-handed bowler.

The leg spin is considered to be the most dangerous type of spin bowling . In addition to the normal throw, which is called the leg break for right-handers , the bowler can usually also bowl different variants, such as the googly , topspinner or flipper . These are used to make predictability more difficult for the batsman .

Pakistani Abdul Qadir , Indian Anil Kumble and Australian Shane Warne are widely considered to be the best leg spinners in cricket history.
