Lehel Somlay (born June 26, 1936 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian football goalkeeper .

Career

Nothing is known about Somlay's youth in his Hungarian homeland. What is certain is that he managed to flee to the West after the popular uprising in 1956. The Hungarian's sporting talent was discovered in France in 1958, where he signed a contract with AC Le Havre . There he was only a substitute goalkeeper behind Christian Villenave and made four appearances in the second division in his first season . The team managed to climb the league with confidence. She also won the French Cup in the replay (3-0) against FC Sochaux . This was Somlay's first title win, even if he wasn't directly involved in it. At the end of the year he moved to second division FC Nantes on loan . There he was able to prevail against the future French national goalkeeper Daniel Éon and completed 36 games in one season. Shortly before the end of the season he hit the headlines when FC Nantes, Red Star Paris, received a competitor in the promotion race. Somlay was offered 20,000 francs for a manipulation of the game, but this did not respond. He made the process public and in this way caused a scandal; FC Nantes won 5-1 on the pitch and the Hungarian returned to Le Havre at the end of the season. It was still Villenave between the posts, but he was struggling with age. Therefore Somlay came in his only first division season on 16 missions. At the end of the season, in 1961, he left the club again because those in charge at Le Havre wanted to rely on Charles Samoy from now on . He then signed with US Forbach . Due to an injury, he only made 20 appearances there, although he was the first goalkeeper. In 1962 he went to AS Aix , where he was only scheduled as a substitute goalkeeper. He was used in the following season. According to some sources, he stayed with the club until 1972, but nothing is known about further assignments. After his career, Somlay stayed in Provence ; Nothing is known about his further life either.
