Corpse catcher

Corpse catcher over the bulwark (white) of the griffin

A corpse catcher is a wide-meshed safety net that is stretched along the side of a ship and is intended to prevent someone from falling overboard in heavy seas or heeling . It increases the bulwark or the railing and is usually stretched between the shrouds on traditional sailors ; for example, two corpse catchers per side are then stretched on a three- master.
