Ordinary seaman (idiom)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ordinary seaman was in the merchant marine until 1983 a seaman who was in training on a ship from the 2nd year of training, his rank was between cabin boy and fully qualified seaman . Only after the third year at sea did the ordinary seaman receive the rank of fully qualified seaman because his training to become a seaman was over.

Delegated Use

The term ordinary seaman is used in its figurative meaning in the casual language of the media for people whose statements or actions are of little, mostly political , weight or should be evaluated in such a way. Correspondingly, it refers to a lower level in a political system represented as an on- board hierarchy . This assessment results from a lack of experience or a general unsuitability for a task.

The accusation of being an " ordinary seaman " is mainly used in public debates to discredit other politicians or to accuse them of amateurism or amateurism. Example: This use of the term became known primarily because Edmund Stoiber referred it to Guido Westerwelle . In the case of the negative, it should again emphasize the special weight of the actors.

There is also a cocktail invented by Charles Schumann under the name of ordinary seaman .
