Lyre (heraldry)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The lyre or lyre is a common figure in heraldry and a common heraldic figure . The old musical instrument lyre is represented by a U-shaped frame with an elongated sound body and strings above it. The heraldic figure is quite close to the original. All heraldic colors are possible, but metals such as gold and silver are used in heaps. It is rare that the number of pieces shown on the shield is more than one.

The instrument is a symbol of art and is a herald image with a message in the family crests of musicians and poets . The common figure also appears in women's coats of arms. Another representation is a U-shaped frame with a foot. Vertical strings above the space in the U-frame complete the instrument. In heraldry, this heraldic figure (overlap) is also emblazoned as a harp .

The instrument can be decorated with a wing or a so-called grimace. This should be mentioned in the description of the coat of arms .
