Leif Kobbelt (born December 12, 1966 in Cologne ) is a German professor of computer science specializing in computer graphics . Since 2001 he has held the chair for computer graphics, multimedia and computer vision at RWTH Aachen University .

Live and act

After his diploma (1992) and doctorate (1994) in computer science at the University of Karlsruhe (today Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), his academic positions were at the University of Wisconsin in Madison (USA) , at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Max -Planck Institute for Computer Science in Saarbrücken , before he was offered a chair at RWTH Aachen at the age of 33. There he built up one of the internationally leading research groups in the field of computer graphics since 2001, which led to the establishment of the Visual Computing Institute in 2015.

His research interests lie in the areas of 3D reconstruction (from simple objects to interiors and halls to entire cities), efficient geometry processing (generation, modification and optimization of 3D models for freeform design, quad mesh generation, CAD / CAM , numerical simulation and rapid prototyping ), real-time image generation (for scientific visualization or computer games), digital fabrication and mobile multimedia applications. He has published numerous influential scientific articles in international journals and conferences and works as a consultant, reviewer and editor for several international companies, research organizations and journals.

He has received a number of renowned prizes for his research work, such as the Heinz-Maier-Leibnitz Prize 2000 , the Eurographics Outstanding Technical Contribution Award 2004, the Günther Enderle Award (1999 and 2012), the ERC Advanced Grant 2013 and the Gottfried-Wilhelm- Leibniz Prize 2014. He was made a Fellow of the Eurographics Association (2008), a Distinguished Professor of the RWTH (2013) and a RWTH Fellow (2019). In 2015 he was accepted as a member of the Academia Europaea and in 2016 of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts .

In addition to his involvement in university teaching, Leif Kobbelt is intensely committed to communicating scientific topics to a broader public.
